Imogen’s Journey

A journey of trust, support and lifelong care

When I think back to when we first met Vanessa, it feels like a lifetime ago. Imogen was just a child, navigating a world that wasn’t always made for her.

We met Vanessa through one of Imogen's earlier OTs, and from that moment on, she became a part of our family’s journey. As Imogen transitioned into NDIS care, we followed Vanessa to whichever workplace she went to, she became someone we could trust completely.

“We didn’t just choose her because she was an excellent clinician (though she is that, too), but because she always took the time to understand Imogen, not just as a patient, but as a person.”

Vanessa’s ongoing support has been a constant throughout Imogen's life. Whether it was adapting her wheelchair, helping us make the transition into adulthood, or getting the modifications we needed to continue our family adventures, Vanessa was always there.

That continuity of care has been priceless to us. Knowing we don’t have to rehash Imogen’s whole history with every new therapist has been such a relief.

“It’s like having someone who has been with us through every step, being there to support Imogen in getting what she needs, and often going above and beyond.”

Imogen has had some real challenges along the way. One of the most difficult times for us was in 2018 when Imogen had major spinal surgery to correct her scoliosis.

The whole experience was terrifying, and her recovery changed so much about how we navigated daily life. But Vanessa was there from the moment Imogen was discharged. She helped with everything from replacing her wheelchair to adjusting her manual handling techniques and supporting us every step of the way. I can’t tell you how much that took off our shoulders.

The assistive technology and modifications we’ve received over the years have made day-to-day life feel much more manageable for us.. The ceiling hoist, for example, really eased the way we care for Imogen at home. It’s made things feel much easier and has reduced a lot of the physical strain we were feeling.

The power wheelchair has also been a huge help. It allows Imogen to get out and about without us having to push her and has supported her to experience more independence in her day-to-day life.

“I honestly don’t know how we would manage without the equipment. These supports have brought so much ease and relief into our daily routine.

Imogen absolutely loves swimming, and it’s such a joy for us to see her enjoying it. Before the pool hoist, only her dad could manage to get her in and out of the pool. Now, I can help too, and she even swims during the day with her support workers while we’re at work.

“It makes me so happy to know that she can do the things she loves, even when we're not around. It's these moments that really show how important the right support is in her life.”

Looking back on everything, what stands out most about working with Vanessa and Lifespan Therapy is the trust and the genuine care they provide.

Vanessa has been with Imogen through everything from childhood to adulthood and the support she’s given has always been focused on what’s best for Imogen.

It’s not just about therapy; it’s about building a relationship and understanding the person. Imogen is 25 now, and Vanessa has been there through all the ups and downs.

“I can’t express enough how important it is to have someone like Vanessa who’s been there from the start, who knows Imogen, and who we trust completely.”
